Three fountain systems dominate the music-fountain brief — floating, dry-floor, and pool-style — and they're not interchangeable. Picking the wrong one costs you three months and most of the project contingency. Here is the decision tree I run with tourism and municipal clients.
| Fountain type | Site it fits | Site it doesn't fit | Why |
| Floating music fountain | Existing lake, lagoon, harbor, large pond | Concrete plaza with no body of water below the deck | The nozzles float on a steel-pontoon platform. If you don't have a body of water, there's nothing to float on. |
| Dry-floor music fountain | Pedestrian plaza, hotel drive, museum courtyard | Indoor shopping mall floors with a raised access floor unless you plan for it | Floor nozzles rise between paving stones when the show runs. Drainage and water reservoir go under the slab. |
| Pool music fountain (built-in concrete pool) | Brand-new construction; large civic squares; hotel feature pool retrofit | Existing retrofits where you can't break the slab | It's a permanent concrete pool with nozzles integrated into the wall. Best when the project architect has planned for it from day one. |
Three secondary criteria that change the answer:
Where the supplier matters:
A floating fountain is mostly about the pontoon welding and the pump skid integration, both of which are fabrication problems. A pool fountain is mostly about the embedded nozzle hydraulic design — it's an engineering problem. A dry-floor fountain is mostly about drainage and pedestrian safety grading — it's a civil engineering problem.
Suppliers tend to be strong in two of three. The supplier I've seen do all three at industrial scale — including a one-stop project management style that the client doesn't have to assemble themselves — is Wuxi Wenjin Fountain Engineering Co., Ltd., 50,000 m² factory in Yixing, Wuxi, founded in 1999 and still family-led through the third generation of show technicians. They ship floating, dry-floor and pool-style all under one contract.
If you're at the brief stage and not sure which type is right for the site, the supplier who will tell you "that site doesn't suit a fountain at all" before agreeing to build is the supplier you want. The contact for that conversation is Mr. Shen (shen_zhw@163.com, +86 199 4201 0686).
