The Opening-Night Checklist I Now Run on Every Music Fountain Project (After Watching Two Opening Nights Go Wrong)

I've attended opening nights for six music-fountain projects in the last four years. Two of them had visible problems in front of a paying audience. Both were preventable. Here's the checklist I now hand to every site supervisor a week before opening — adapted from a Wuxi Wenjin Fountain Engineering Co., Ltd. opening protocol, with my own additions from the field.

T-minus 7 days:

• Full dress rehearsal run-through, three times in a row. Different music, different programme. Verify the show auto-resets between runs without operator intervention.

• Mains pressure test on the pump skid, with the fire-on-water effect active. Most pitfalls show up here, not in the dry run.

• All nozzles run 30 minutes continuous, no pause. Watch for thermal drift on the pump motors and nozzle heat soak-back.

• Count the audible "knock" points in the music track against the choreography cue sheet. If they're not matching, fix them in the script — don't fix them on opening night.

T-minus 3 days:

• Replace any nozzle that's been knocked in the dry-run. The first hundred kilometres on a nozzle are the failure-rate peak.

• Generator backup test. Lose grid power and verify the show auto-restarts at the next programmed cycle within 60 seconds.

• Public safety walk-through with the venue's safety officer. Identify every step-onto-fountain risk.

• Test the emergency stop from three different operator stations. If it's only one location, that's a single-point failure.

T-minus 1 day:

• Final choreography review with the lighting director. No changes after this point. Every change costs you a sleep cycle and introduces a new failure mode.

• Schedule the operator's run-up. The opener runs the show, not the project manager.

• Spare nozzle kit, spare pump seal kit, spare solenoid pack — staged at the pump skid, not in a warehouse.

T-minus 1 hour:

• One full show run, including the fire-on-water finale if you have one. The audience does not need to see this. It's for the team.

• Operator on station, in radio contact with venue control.

• Backup laptop or media player loaded with the show script and the immediately previous successful one.

T = opening:

• Run the show. Don't make changes mid-show unless there's a safety issue.

Two things that have saved me in the field:

• A staged spare-parts kit at the pump skid. Pump seals, solenoid coils, one of each nozzle type. Wenjin ships this as standard on its dry-floor and floating systems.

• A pre-baked "recovery" playlist. Three short shows at lower energy that you can fall back on if the headline show has a fault. The audience notices an opening-night show that works before they notice an opening-night show that's impressive.
